In this chapter you will be introduced to the Mac OS X desktop. This is an overview chapter and a lot of the concepts introduced here will actually be explained in later chapters. Things to really pay attention to in this chapter (in my opinion) are the four methods for viewing a window and how to us the Mac Help system. I believe that the built-in help system is under utilized by the computer driver! I tend to forget that it is even there! In these chapters you will cover two of the most confusing and frustrating aspects of ANY computer operating system...File Management and File Finding! Yes - learning where to store your files and leaning how to find those same files later on can be a very intimidating process. Mac OS X has some features that can help you organize your files. In Chapter 2 you will read about (and hopefully try) some of these features for staying in control of the files. In Chapter 3 you are introduced to "Spotlight" - this program has been Beefed Up since its introduction in Mac OS X and has now really come into its own. I happily click on the Command ( Read your textbook with your Mac nearby so you can try some of their suggestions. - Mario :)

In this chapter you will learn to work with the Dock. The Dock was introduced in Mac OS X and combines the features of two Mac OS 9 programs - The Launcher and The Application Menu. The Dock is highly customizable and allows you to change it so that it works the best for you! During this assignment play with the settings and try out different configurations. Leave the New settings on for a couple of days - Do they work for you? If Yes then Great! If Not then tweak the Dock settings and try that out for a few more days. Repeat this process until you have configured the Dock - Just the way You Like it!! Read your textbook with your Mac nearby so you can try some of their suggestions. - Mario :)

This chapter covers a lot of information about how to deal with older Mac application programs. There are several good tidbits of information for issues like how to deal with a "Stuck" program or how to find out version information about a specific program. The section also covers the Heads-Up program switcher, Expose and Spaces. Spaces is the program that allows you to open "Virtual Monitors" on your Mac. I tend to work with 4 spaces (you can have configurations of 4, 8 or 16 virtual monitors) - Space #1 holds my regular Mac desktop where I tend to do most of my work, Space #2 holds my email - Open and ready to Go, Space #3 holds my Parallels Program for running Windows on a Mac and Space #4 is empty in case I need it. I like using Spaces because it really allows me to manage my desktop space and it allows me to keep my computer AND myself better organized! In this chapter we take a look at how we can move files (data) between programs, between Apple computers and finally between a Mac and a PC. We also take a look at using Time Machine - OS X's built in back up program. Moving data off the computer by using iSync and .Mac (now call Moblie Me) is also dicussed. Personally I use both Time Machine and Mobile Me (with my iPhone & iCal) quite extensively and really like them. In this chapter we learn about all the different options that can be set on the Mac computer. Some of the preferences deal with how objects look, for example, what picture do you want for your wallpaper? Mine is a picture, that my wife took, of a sandy, quiet beach in Mexico. Other options deal with how the computer will operate, for example, do you have a vision problem? Then by making some changes in the Universal Access preferences you can have your Mac use a Larger Display Font. And finally, Security and Network connectivity are some additional preferences that we need to address if we have our Mac's connected to the Internet. In the chapter we learn about the various Free programs that are part of the Mac OS X installation. When we install OS X or if our new Mac comes with OS X then these are the programs that are already located on our Mac computers. Some programs will be covered more extensively in later chapters like iTunes is covered in Lesson 8. Some of these programs like iCal, iPhoto, Mail, Safari, etc do outstanding jobs and you do not really need to go out and buy a seperate, for example, email program. As in anything each of these programs have their Pluses and their Minuses but in the end you can not beat the price! In this chaspter we start using some of the features that originally distiguished a Mac from a PC. Audio and Video have always been a BIG component of the Apple legacy computers, even my old Mac SE30 - anyone remember that little Mac in a Box? - could run circles around any equvalent PCs. We will cover how to burn CDs and DVDs, we will learn how to play DVD movies and finally how to use iTunes to manage and play music, movies, and TV shows. In this chapter we learn about user accounts and how a Mac - right out of the box - is capable of being configured to work with mulitple users. You can buy one iMac for the family and then create a separate account for each member of the family. That way when each person logs into the iMac their personal settings are displayed. My account would have a wallpaper of my Oakland A's & SF Giant's, my wife's would be a beach sceane, my son would be his current favorite rock band and my daughter - well she is ten and prone to RAPIDLY changing her mind! All the other settings would also follow the "owner" of the account. If you have kids then the use of Parental Controls empowers you to take control of what they can do or can not do! And fianlly by leveraging the Mac's six security shields, help you maximize your systems integrity. Read your textbook with your Mac nearby so you can try some of their suggestions. - Mario :)

With the use of AppleTalk - Apple's networking system - You could share information across multiple Macs with out needing to carry a floppy disk between them. Today Macs are network ready right out of the box via a network cable or via a wireless connection. Macs can share files, network with PCs and even do some Screen Sharing!
