Instructor's Note:
In Lessons 1 - 4 you will mostly be practicing with the drawing tools found in Dreamweaver. If you are not artisitically gifted (like your instuctor) it is OK...you can do what I do...hire someone that is a good artist!! Or use ClipArt!!
If you take the time during these lessons to learn how to use the tools then later when you need to make modifications to objects you will have some familiarity. But remember as in anything you do - the more your repeat or practice an action the easier it will be to do...so give yourself a break and be patient with yourself. Eventually you will master all the subtle nuances of the Flash drawing tools.
Now to work!

Flash CS5 Jumpstart
The first lesson provides an overview of Flash. This lesson takes you through the basics you will need to work with Flash files as well as a quick look at the tools and workspace.
This first exercise is designed to help you get practice with determining the dimensions and frame rate of your projects (in this case, a banner for a fictional company ZooTube) and create a new file accordingly.
The tasks that you should complete for Lesson #1:
- FIRST - Watch this short Video - This video is a Promotional Video put out by Adobe TV but it has some good generic information about Flash CS5:
- SECOND - Watch the Lesson 1 Video from the textbook DVD

Getting Started with the Drawing Tools
This lesson is designed to make you more comfortable when working with Flash CS5's drawing tools; the basic building blocks for Flash projects.
After completing Lesson 2 in the book, students should feel comfortable with the various drawing tools available in Flash CS5. Now, you will practice using these tools by creating an image from scratch.
Think about the way children draw houses: a rectangle for the house, a triangle for the roof, windows, a door, and of course the chimney with the little billows of smoke coming out.
The exercises here help you practice with drawing, adding color to drawings and transforming elements in drawings.
The tasks that you should complete for Lesson #2:

Using Symbols and the Library
In this lesson, you will learn more of the fundamental skills that are necessary to complete the rest of the lessons in the book.
In the following exercise, students get additional practice working with Symbols and the Library panel in order to become familiar with the process of working with reusable assets in their projects. The first exercise is simply to locate imagery for use in their projects.
Important Note: I should point out that online images are subject to copyright law. Using them for educational purposes is often fine, however, in work for hire, this imagery would have to be purchased.

Creating Basic Animation
This lesson provides students with a good foundational understanding of the Timeline, frames, keyframes, and tweening.
Storyboarding
Students new to Flash often want to dive into animation immediately, however, because animation can be time intensive, it pays off to pre-plan their work. Here are some basic steps that can be applied to virtually any project. Ask students to take out a piece of paper and pencil and walk through these steps.
- Think about the subject and length of the animation being created.
- Make a list of the graphics needed, then create them or find them in free libraries online.
- Determine what audio may be needed and where the source for this will come from.
- What is the beginning, middle and end of the animation?
- Using a sketchbook or additional pieces of paper, storyboard the structure of the animation being sure to include animation cues, fade ins and length. Remember that your playback time is a combination of total frames divided by your frame rate (i.e. 48 frames at 24 seconds is 2 total seconds of playback time).
