Objective: To critically analyze a speaker, her/his speech, the setting and audience using all of the techniques and information you’ve learned in lectures and discussions.  It is to be written in essay form (and try to be entertaining, I have to read 60 of these :)

THIS MUST BE A LIVE SPEECH!
Speeches viewed on television or the internet are NOT allowed!

Items to Include:

  1. Your expectations before the event and later how they were or were not fulfilled.
  2. Audience members and their perceptions.
  3. A critical, DETAILED evaluation of the speaker.  This should be the MAJOR focus of the paper!  It can be positive, negative or both.
  4. Environment.
  5. Don’t forget to include; who the speaker is, what the topic is, is it night or day, is your name on the top of the page, etc.

WORDS OF WARNING

It is not enough to say the speaker was good or bad or boring, you must explain WHY!!

Do not write in your paper everything that the speaker SAID.  I am not interested in what they said necessarily.  I want you to evaluate HOW they said it.  You can quote occasionally to support your observations.

Papers failing to meet the minimum page requirement (for example, if you paper is one page, or one and half pages, or one and three quarters, you get the picture) will not be accepted.

You can turn in your paper early.

Late papers:  There is a ONE WEEK grace period to turn in a paper past the due date.  After one week has passed, I will not accept late work.  There is a 10 point penalty for late papers.
